Tall Ships Youth Trust
As the UK’s oldest sail-training charity, the Tall Ships Youth Trust’s mission is to enable young people aged 12-25 years to fulfil their life potential through challenging experiences at sea under sail.
Nearly 80% of the young people we support are disadvantaged – many have had the most dreadful start to their lives and are facing so many challenges including learning difficulties and behavioural or emotional issues. Many are young carers, young offenders or have been excluded from school. Last year, we gave over 850 youngsters a life-changing voyage; over 80% of them told us so, and many of them go on to careers at sea.
We know that disadvantaged young people often lack the confidence and self-esteem needed to realise their full potential. We offer them a unique, physically and mentally challenging residential experience on an ocean-going sailing vessel. Working as a team, the young people are fully involved in all activities onboard and all of them are respected and valued for their personal contributions. The voyages develop the life and social skills, self-esteem, and confidence necessary to realise their true potential and make positive life choices.
After a week at sea with us, many young lives have been transformed. A recent project involving 80 unemployed young people saw a remarkable 97% of them go onto into education or employment within 6 months of the project’s completion. We change lives.
